I am frequently asked about this new device which is placed endoscopically to line the duodenum and limit absorption. It is advocated for the treatment of diabetes and obesity, however in the UK, following review by NICE the following provisional recommendation has been made:
Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of implantation of a duodenal–jejunal bypass sleeve (DJBS) for managing obesity is limited in quality and quantity. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research.
As an emerging new intervention, there is limited high quality data regarding safety and outcome. Further research is required before this procedure becomes accepted as a standard weight loss intervention.
