The second report of weight loss surgery in the UK has been recently published. 161 surgeons working in 137 hospitals in the UK have recorded 32,073 weight loss procedures. The breadth of cover and number of procedures reported is unprecedented and indicates the general willingness of surgical teams to report their data and outcomes for the benefit of patients.
Two main messages are highlighted by the report; a) the effectiveness of weight loss surgery and b) its safety.
Three years following surgery, patients on average lost approximately 60% of their excess weight and two years following surgery 65.1% of type 2 diabetics reverted to a non-diabetic state. These figures are remarkable and a testament to the professionalism of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
