Sleeve gastrectomy was originally a procedure that was performed as the first part of a more complex weight loss operation, or would sometimes be performed if a bypass was difficult to do due to a large overhanging liver. However, evidence collected over the past several years has supported this operation as a primary stand-alone procedure which in itself gave very good results.
A recent publication reported a 60% excess weight loss 5.9 years following sleeve gastrectomies and a 85% remission rate of diabetes.
